MANILA — Prominent Filipino statesman Juan Ponce Enrile has died at the age of 101, his daughter announced on November 13, 2025.
Known for his long and influential career in Philippine politics, Enrile served under eight presidents, held the post of defence minister during the Marcos Sr. era, later became Senate President, and acted as chief legal counsel to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr..
Though his legacy is marked by controversy—especially his role in the declaring of martial law in 1972—Enrile’s passing closes a chapter of Philippine political history spanning more than six decades.
“He was one of the most enduring and polarising figures in Philippine politics,” according to reports.
Further details on the circumstances of his death and memorial arrangements are pending release by his family.
