In a shocking turn of events, a 28-year-old man was rescued after jumping off a passenger ferry en route to San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. The dramatic incident, which quickly went viral on social media, occurred around 4 p.m., as confirmed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Toledo City.
Witnesses were stunned as the man, whose identity remains undisclosed, suddenly leapt over the railings of a Lite Ferry vessel, triggering immediate concern among passengers. Petty Officer Third Class Jerry Everett Dela Peña of PCG-Toledo City recounted how one courageous passenger attempted to save him while crew members and others on board quickly threw life rings and jackets into the water. However, strong waves pushed the men further from the ship, complicating the rescue.
Just in time, Petty Officer 1 Alexis Cabreas from PCG Antique’s Special Operations Unit arrived and successfully assisted in bringing them to safety. According to Dela Peña, all three individuals are now out of harm’s way.
Preliminary investigations suggest the man was struggling with personal issues before the incident. He has since been placed in the custody of authorities in San Carlos.
This event underscores the importance of mental health awareness and the need for accessible support systems. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available through the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) crisis hotlines and Hopeline PH.
Ultimately, this serves as a powerful reminder of life’s unpredictability—and the vital role of compassion and community in times of crisis.
