On August 6, 2025, three soldiers from the Army’s 18th Infantry Battalion were injured during a clash with armed men in Barangay Campo Uno, Lamitan City, Basilan. The attack involved the use of assault rifles and grenade launchers against an Army detachment. Local officials reported that the gunmen approached from two directions, opening fire on the soldiers stationed at the detachment. Despite the surprise attack, the soldiers managed to return fire, preventing the attackers from getting closer.
The injured personnel include a corporal and two privates who were on duty at the roadside base. Following the shootout, the attackers retreated upon noticing the arrival of reinforcements from the Army and local police, along with volunteer community watchmen.
According to local residents, the assailants were identified as extortionists whose activities had previously been restricted due to the establishment of additional Army outposts in the area, aimed at protecting local businesses from harassment. Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay condemned the attack, which caused significant alarm among the residents of Barangay Campo Uno. As part of the response, he has offered a cash reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the identification and prosecution of those responsible for the attack.
