MANILA, Philippines — A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Surigao, Surigao del Norte, on Friday morning, October 17, 2025, at around 7:03 a.m., according to initial data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremor hit at a moderately shallow depth of 59 kilometers, about 77 km east of Surigao City, and was reportedly felt across parts of Caraga Region, including Tandag, Cabadbaran, Butuan, Bayugan, and Buenavista. Residents described the shaking as light but noticeable.
Other international seismic agencies — including RéNaSS (France) and GFZ (Germany) — also recorded the quake, with reported magnitudes ranging from 5.4 to 6.1, a common variance in early readings. So far, there have been no reports of significant damage or injuries, though minor disturbances such as falling objects and broken windows were noted in some areas.
Authorities have not issued a tsunami warning, but residents are advised to remain alert for aftershocks and follow safety guidelines.
