MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte on Tuesday expressed sorrow over the deaths caused by the sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3 off Basilan.
She extended her condolences to the families of the victims and called on Filipinos to pray for those still missing, as well as for the safety of rescuers continuing search-and-rescue operations.
Duterte also reminded sea travelers to strictly observe safety measures, including wearing life jackets, avoiding travel during bad weather, and ensuring vessels are not overloaded.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the ferry—carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew—sank around 1:50 a.m. Monday, about 2.75 nautical miles northeast of Baluk-Baluk Island. At least 18 people have died, 28 remain missing, and more than 300 were rescued.
