An off-duty police officer was arrested early Monday morning, April 7, in Barangay Sapangdaku, Cebu City after allegedly assaulting a civilian and threatening him with a firearm. Authorities identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Police Corporal, known by the alias ‘Ivan,’ assigned to the Mandaue City Police Office. The victim was named as Nerson, 32, a local resident. According to an initial investigation conducted by Cebu City Police Station 9, the incident occurred past 4 a.m. when the suspect suddenly attacked the victim without clear provocation. The officer reportedly beat Nerson and pointed his service firearm at him during the confrontation.
The assault resulted in injuries and caused fear to the victim. Responding officers recovered the suspect’s issued firearm at the scene. The policeman is now detained at the Guadalupe Police Station while formal charges are being prepared.
The officer faces complaints for Grave Threat and Physical Injuries under Philippine law. Authorities have not yet released a statement on the motive behind the incident or whether internal disciplinary action will follow. The investigation is ongoing. The case has drawn public attention amid concerns about accountability and discipline within the Philippine National Police, especially involving off-duty misconduct.
