Two Filipino nationals have been arrested in Hong Kong for allegedly attempting to withdraw an astonishing $10 billion from an HSBC branch using fake documents. The suspects, 68-year-old Ramon Revillosa Jr. and a 38-year-old woman claiming to be a lawyer, reportedly presented forged paperwork, including a capability letter, a guarantee letter, and a certificate of balance from the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp. The incident took place on February 10.
Revillosa, who describes himself as a businessman, was denied bail by Principal Magistrate Don So on February 20, with another bail hearing set for February 27. If convicted, he could face up to 14 years in prison. His request to access personal belongings in order to contact relatives in the Philippines for bail money was also rejected.
Authorities have also arrested three suspected accomplices: a Malaysian man, a Taiwanese man, and a woman who entered Hong Kong using a Hong Kong and Macau travel permit. The Philippine consulate general in Hong Kong has acknowledged the incident but has not disclosed the identities of the two Filipino suspects.
This case underscores the severe legal consequences of financial fraud and the level of international cooperation required to combat such crimes.
