Frozen mackerel valued at P202 million allegedly smuggled from China was confiscated by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Department of Agriculture at the Port of Manila (POM). Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, and BOC-POM District Collector Alexander Gerard Alviar inspected 19 shipping containers of frozen mackerel.
The shipment was reportedly misdeclared as frozen fried taro. The shipment has been on hold since Jan. 20 after the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service requested an inspection. Following examinations on Feb. 18 and 19, a warrant of seizure and detention was issued for violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act. Rubio emphasized the BOC’s commitment to preventing illegal agricultural imports.
