MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday said tensions have eased in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, following the successful de-escalation of a “rido” or clan conflict that erupted after the killing of a local official.
Acting PNP chief PLtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. credited the swift coordination between the police, military, local leaders, and members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for restoring calm and ensuring residents’ safety.
“The Philippine National Police remains steadfast in pursuing justice for the slain barangay official while ensuring that peace is sustained through continuous dialogue and law enforcement cooperation,” Nartatez said.
The conflict was reportedly triggered by the killing of Ustadz Nadzmi “Bahang” Tarahin, an Islamic teacher and barangay official, which led to armed clashes between two clans.
Joint PNP–AFP checkpoints and patrols remain in place to maintain order, while the Basilan Council of Elders and local officials were commended for mediating peace talks that ended the standoff.
The PNP said it will continue peacebuilding and law enforcement efforts with the AFP and local stakeholders to sustain long-term stability in the province.
